Vastu for Kitchen Placement in Modern Mysuru Home Designs

Umashankara A

Ask most families in Mysuru what they want from their new home and the kitchen comes up early, often with a Vastu question attached. Good architects in Mysuru treat that question as a design input, not an afterthought, because the kitchen’s position affects the plumbing stack, the ventilation, the elevation and even how the plan reads at sanction.

The difficulty is that modern plans rarely look like the homes Vastu guidance grew up around. Plots are narrower, kitchens open into dining areas, and many families want a utility, a pantry and a breakfast counter as well. This article explains how the traditional preferences translate into a working floor plan, and where the compromises usually sit.

A note before we start: Vastu is a matter of belief and family preference. We treat it as a brief the client sets, and we balance it against light, airflow, structure and budget.

The preferred zones and why they matter to the plan

Traditional guidance places the kitchen in the southeast of the house, the corner associated with fire. The northwest is the most commonly accepted alternative. The northeast is usually avoided for the kitchen, and so is the centre of the house.

What this means on paper depends on which way your plot faces:

  • East-facing plots often make a southeast kitchen easy, since it sits beside the front of the house and near the service side.
  • North-facing plots can place the kitchen at the rear southeast, which keeps it away from the entrance and the living room.
  • West-facing plots frequently use the northwest option, placing the kitchen near the front corner with a utility behind it.
  • South-facing plots can hold a southeast kitchen close to the road, which needs careful handling so the kitchen window does not face the street directly.

On a narrow site, the kitchen zone also has to line up with the staircase, the toilet stack and the car parking, so it is worth sketching several arrangements before settling.

Inside the kitchen: stove, sink and storage

Placing the room is only half the job. Within the kitchen, families commonly ask for the following:

  1. Cooking facing east. The hob sits on the east wall, or on a counter where the cook faces east. On a tight plan, a counter along the south wall with the hob at its eastern end is a common solution.
  2. Stove and sink kept apart. Fire and water are traditionally separated, so the sink is not placed directly beside or opposite the hob. In practice, an L-shaped or parallel counter gives a comfortable gap and also works better ergonomically.
  3. Water in the north or northeast part of the kitchen. The sink and water purifier often go here, which suits a window for daylight over the washing area.
  4. Heavy storage in the south and west. Tall units, the refrigerator and grain storage usually sit along these walls.
  5. Openings towards the east or north. Windows and the exhaust are planned for morning light and cross ventilation.

None of these conflict with good kitchen design. The work triangle between hob, sink and refrigerator still applies, and the chimney duct still needs a short route to an outside wall. Where preference and practicality pull apart, show both options side by side and let the family choose.

Open kitchens, utilities and multi-storey homes

Modern homes add situations the older texts never considered.

Open kitchens. Many families now want the kitchen open to the dining area. The zone logic still applies to where the cooking counter sits. A partial wall, a glass partition or a sliding shutter can define the kitchen boundary without closing it off, which also helps with cooking smells.

Utility and wash areas. The utility usually sits beside the kitchen on the south, west or northwest side, with a door to the outside or a ventilated balcony.

G+1 homes with a rental floor. Stacking both kitchens vertically is usually sensible anyway, because it keeps plumbing and drainage in one shaft and reduces leakage risk.

Pooja room clashes. The pooja room is usually preferred in the northeast, and families often want it away from the kitchen wall. Settling both rooms at the same planning stage avoids expensive shifts later.

Settle it before drawings go for sanction

The cheapest time to move a kitchen is during concept planning. After submission it means revised drawings; after the slab is cast it means breaking plumbing sleeves.

A sensible sequence looks like this:

  • Share your Vastu priorities at the first meeting, and say which ones are firm and which are flexible.
  • Review the concept floor plans with the kitchen, pooja room, staircase and toilets marked together.
  • Check the 3D elevation, since the kitchen window and chimney outlet often show on the front or side face.
  • Confirm the working drawings, including plumbing and electrical points for the hob, chimney, sink and appliances.
  • Only then move the plan forward for sanction and structural design.

At Uniq Builders, our architectural design service prepares working drawings for all floors with up to three rounds of revisions, and you choose from 3D elevation options before one is built. That revision window is where kitchen placement questions should be closed. Structural design with a soil test, plan sanction, khata and utility connections are handled as part of every package, with statutory fees paid directly by the client. Every package also includes free assistance for government licensing work.

On budget, kitchen position rarely changes the construction rate by itself, but a kitchen far from the plumbing shaft adds pipe runs, and a large modular kitchen changes the interiors figure. The starting rates on our construction packages are ₹1,999, ₹2,499 and ₹2,999 per sq ft for Premium, Gold and Platinum, with terms and conditions applying and the final figure confirmed after a free site visit. Gold and Platinum include interiors, which matters if you want the modular kitchen designed together with the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kitchen work in the northeast if the plot leaves no other option?

Some families accept it with adjustments, such as moving the hob to the southeast part of that room. Others would rather rearrange the plan. An architect can usually show whether a southeast or northwest layout is achievable before you settle on a compromise.

Does an open kitchen go against Vastu?

Not necessarily. Most families apply the zone preferences to the cooking counter and hob position, and use a partition or shutter to define the space. The open plan then works for light and circulation.

Can you rework the kitchen in an existing house for Vastu reasons?

Yes, Uniq Builders takes up renovation work and interiors for existing and old houses. A site visit shows where the drainage, gas line and structural walls sit, which decides how far the kitchen can realistically move.
