UPVC vs Aluminium Windows for Mysuru Homes

Umashankara A

Windows are one of those decisions that arrive quietly during home construction in Mysuru and then stay with you for decades. Most families spend weeks on elevations and flooring, then pick window frames in an afternoon when the fabricator is already waiting for measurements. The choice affects how cool your rooms stay, how much dust gets in and how often you call for repairs.

This guide covers what each material does well, how the local climate changes the answer, and when in your build the decision should be made.

What you are really choosing between

UPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) frames are made from rigid plastic profiles, usually reinforced with a galvanised steel section inside the hollow chambers. The frames are welded at the corners, which gives a sealed joint, and they are typically fitted with rubber gaskets that close tightly against the glass and the sash.

Aluminium frames are extruded metal sections, finished with powder coating or anodising. They are joined mechanically at the corners. Aluminium is strong for its weight, so profiles can be slimmer and openings can be larger. Standard aluminium conducts heat readily; thermally broken aluminium adds an insulating strip inside the profile to reduce this, at a higher cost.

Both come in sliding and casement styles and can take toughened or double glazed units. System quality, hardware and installation matter as much as the material.

How the Mysuru climate tips the comparison

Mysuru is warm for much of the year, with strong afternoon sun on west and south faces, a proper monsoon, and fine dust in newer layouts where construction is still going on around you. Each of these favours a different strength.

Heat. UPVC is a poor conductor of heat, so the frame itself does not warm up and radiate into the room. Standard aluminium frames get hot to the touch in direct sun. For bedrooms facing west, UPVC or thermally broken aluminium makes a noticeable difference, especially if you plan to run air conditioning.

Dust. Welded UPVC corners and multi-point gaskets usually seal better than a basic aluminium sliding window. If your plot is in a developing layout with open sites nearby, a tight seal saves a lot of daily wiping.

Rain. Driving rain tests drainage design more than material. Look for weep holes, a sloped sill and a good frame to masonry seal.

Noise. Houses on busy roads such as ring roads or main arterial streets benefit from casement windows with gaskets and double glazing. UPVC casements tend to perform well here; aluminium sliders generally perform the weakest.

Large openings. If your design includes wide sliding doors to a garden or balcony, or floor to ceiling glazing, aluminium’s strength lets you use slimmer frames and bigger panels. UPVC can do large openings too, but the profiles get bulkier.

Side by side: practical factors

Factor UPVC Aluminium
Heat through frame Low High, unless thermally broken
Seal against dust and noise Generally good Depends heavily on system quality
Sightlines Thicker frames Slimmer frames
Colour options White is standard; laminated wood and grey finishes available Wide powder coat and anodised range
Maintenance Wipe clean; check gaskets and hardware Wipe clean; check coating, rollers and seals
Very large spans Possible but bulkier Better suited

On cost, prices vary widely by brand, profile series, glass and hardware, so compare written quotes for the same window sizes and glass specification rather than general claims about which material is cheaper.

A simple way to decide room by room

You do not have to use one material across the whole house. Many families mix, based on what each opening needs.

  • West and south bedrooms: UPVC casement, or thermally broken aluminium, with gaskets.
  • Living room opening to a sit out or lawn: aluminium sliding door for slim frames and wide glass, if the budget allows a quality system.
  • Kitchen: a casement or top hung window that seals well against dust, with a mesh shutter.
  • Bathrooms: small top hung or louvre units; either material works if drainage and ventilation are right.
  • Street facing rooms on a busy road: UPVC casements with double glazing.

If you mix materials, match frame colours so the elevation stays consistent.

When to lock the decision in your build journey

The window choice belongs at the design stage, not the finishing stage. Frame depth, sill detail, lintel height and opening size all change slightly between UPVC and aluminium systems, and your working drawings should reflect the system you intend to use.

A practical sequence looks like this:

  1. During elevation design: decide the look you want (slim frames, woodgrain, white) and the opening style for each room.
  2. During working drawings: fix window sizes and sill and lintel levels to suit the chosen system.
  3. During brickwork: leave openings to the agreed size and keep them square and plumb.
  4. After plastering, before painting: measure again on site and place the order, since fabricated windows are made to actual opening sizes.
  5. At installation: check sealant, drainage slots and hardware.

When we prepare architectural design and working drawings at Uniq Builders, window openings are drawn for every floor, and families get up to three rounds of revisions, which is the right time to settle this question. Our packages are built to a written specification shared during consultation, so check that the window material and system are named in it rather than left to a verbal promise. You can compare what each level covers on our construction packages page, where rates start at ₹1,999, ₹2,499 and ₹2,999 per sq ft (terms and conditions apply, with the final figure confirmed after a free site visit).

Frequently asked questions

Are UPVC windows suitable for the Mysuru heat?

Yes, UPVC generally handles heat well because the frame does not conduct much warmth into the room. Choose a reputable profile with steel reinforcement and UV stabilised material so it holds its shape and colour in strong sun. Good installation with proper sealing matters as much as the material.

Do aluminium windows let in more dust than UPVC?

Basic aluminium sliding windows often seal less tightly than UPVC casements, so more dust can get in. A well designed aluminium system with quality gaskets and brush seals narrows this gap considerably. If dust is a major concern, casement styles in either material usually seal better than sliders.

Can I switch from aluminium to UPVC after construction has started?

It is possible, but easiest before brickwork and lintels are complete, since the two systems can need slightly different opening sizes and sill details. Once plastering is done, changes may mean adjusting openings and repairing finishes. Settle the choice while working drawings are being prepared to avoid rework.
