Bank Branch Interiors in Mysuru: Counters, Lockers and Security

Umashankara A

A bank branch is one of the hardest commercial fit-outs to get right. Interiors in Mysuru for a bank, cooperative society or finance company have to welcome customers and still keep cash, documents and lockers behind layers of protection. A layout that looks good but ignores how cash moves through the branch will cause trouble on the first audit.

Most branches in the region take space in existing buildings, such as a ground floor shop or a converted house, that were never built with a strong room in mind. This guide covers the counters, the locker zone and the security layer that ties them together.

Start with the bank’s security manual and the building

Most banks and finance companies have an internal specification for branch premises covering strong rooms, lockers, alarms and CCTV. Get this document before any drawing is made, and have your designer mark where the building falls short.

Then check the building itself:

  • Floor loading. Strong room walls, a vault door and a bank of steel lockers are heavy. A structural engineer should confirm the slab can take the load, especially above the ground floor.
  • Location of the strong room. It should ideally sit on the ground floor or basement, away from external walls that face a public road, with no shared wall with a neighbouring shop.
  • Openings. Windows and ventilators near the cash area and strong room often need grills, reinforced frames or closing up altogether.
  • Services. Plan for a dedicated power circuit, UPS and battery room, and network cabling for core banking, ATM and CCTV.

Confirm current requirements with the bank’s premises or security department rather than copying another branch.

Designing cash and service counters

The banking hall is where customers form their impression of the branch. It is also where the risk is highest, because cash changes hands across a counter.

Separate the counter types. Cash counters, enquiry and account opening desks, and loan or relationship manager cabins each need a different treatment. Cash counters sit behind a protected partition; enquiry desks can be open and low; manager cabins need privacy for document discussions.

Cash counter construction. Common elements include:

  • A solid counter base, often with a steel or reinforced lining facing the customer side
  • Toughened or security glazing above the counter, with a narrow transaction slot or deal tray
  • A lockable door into the cash cabin, ideally with access control
  • Space for note counting machines, a small cash safe or drawer, and a printer
  • Adequate lighting on the counter surface so the cashier and the CCTV camera can both see notes clearly

Customer side comfort. Queue space, a ledge for filling slips, waiting seats and token display screens reduce crowding. A lower counter section helps senior citizens.

Materials. Granite, quartz or high-pressure laminate counter tops outlast veneer. Choose floors that stay non-slip during the monsoon.

Locker rooms and strong rooms

Safe deposit lockers are a major reason customers choose a branch, and they carry the highest liability. The locker area should be designed as a controlled zone, not just a room with cabinets in it.

Strong room shell. The strong room is normally built with reinforced concrete walls, floor and ceiling to the specification set by the bank, with a certified vault door and a ventilator or emergency door as required. This is civil work, so it must be sequenced before interior finishes begin.

Locker room layout. A practical arrangement has:

  1. An entry point from the banking hall that staff can see and control
  2. A visitor register or access control point at the entrance
  3. The locker bank itself, with aisles wide enough for two people
  4. A private cubicle or booth where customers can open their locker boxes out of sight of others
  5. Good ventilation, since strong rooms tend to trap heat and humidity

Humidity and expansion. Monsoon humidity can damage documents inside lockers, so plan dehumidifiers or air conditioning with power backup. Leave space, and slab capacity, for more locker cabinets later.

Building the security layer

Security in a branch is a set of overlapping systems. The interior design must give each one a place.

  • CCTV zoning. Cameras should cover the entrance, banking hall, every cash counter, the strong room door, the locker room entrance, the ATM lobby and the rear exit. Coordinate camera positions with false ceiling lights so there is no glare or blind spot.
  • Intrusion and fire alarms. Motion sensors, door contacts on the strong room, panic buttons at cash counters and the manager cabin, and fire and smoke detection all need concealed wiring routes.
  • Access control. Staff-only zones, including the cash cabin, server room and strong room approach, work best with card or biometric access and a log.
  • ATM lobby. It usually needs a separate entry, its own camera and independent power so it runs outside banking hours.

Hide wiring above the false ceiling, but provide inspection access for servicing.

Planning the fit-out with one accountable team

A branch fit-out combines civil work, cabling, joinery, glazing and security installation. When each trade is hired separately, counters get reworked around CCTV and the opening date slips.

At Uniq Builders we handle architecture, structure, interiors and construction in-house, with engineers, architects and craftsmen on our own payroll. Our commercial and corporate interiors service covers offices, banks, institutions and IT workspaces, designed and delivered end to end. For a branch, that means the structural check on the slab, the strong room civil work and the counter joinery come from one team working to one drawing set.

Before signing with any contractor, ask who coordinates with the bank’s security vendor, and request a written schedule once the site is measured.

Frequently asked questions

Can an old house or shop in Mysuru be converted into a bank branch?

Often it can, provided the structure can take the load of a strong room and lockers and the layout allows a secure ground floor zone. A structural engineer should inspect the building first. Uniq Builders takes up interiors and renovation for existing and old buildings, so the check and the fit-out can be handled together.

Who decides the specification for the strong room and security systems?

The bank or financial institution sets these requirements in its own premises and security guidelines. The fit-out contractor builds to that specification and coordinates with the security vendor. Always confirm the current version with the bank’s premises department before construction starts.

Does Uniq Builders provide a free site visit for commercial fit-outs?

Yes. The site visit and first consultation are free, and you can reach the team on +91 98449 93200 or hello@uniqbuilders.com, Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. A written scope and quote follow once the premises have been assessed.
