Maintenance Guide: Caring for Modular Kitchens and Wardrobes

Umashankara A

Most homeowners spend weeks choosing shutters, handles and countertop colours, then almost no time thinking about how the finished units will be looked after. Yet the difference between a kitchen that feels new after ten years and one that sags after three is usually care, not cost. For anyone investing in interiors in Mysuru, a simple maintenance routine protects the money already spent.

Mysuru’s climate adds its own demands. The monsoon months bring humidity that swells board edges and invites mould behind wardrobes on external walls. Daily cooking, with its tadka, oil and steam, coats every surface near the hob.

Know what your units are made of

Care starts with knowing the materials, because the wrong cleaner can do more harm than a year of neglect. Ask your interiors contractor for a written list of finishes and hardware at handover. At minimum, note down:

  • Carcass material: BWP (boiling water proof) plywood, MR (moisture resistant) plywood, or particle board and MDF. Particle board and MDF are far less forgiving of water.
  • Shutter finish: laminate, acrylic, PU or lacquer paint, veneer, or glass. Acrylic and high-gloss finishes scratch easily; veneer needs occasional polishing.
  • Countertop: granite, quartz, or solid surface. Granite may need periodic sealing; quartz generally does not.
  • Hardware: hinge type (soft-close or standard), drawer channels (telescopic, tandem box, or ball-bearing), lift-up mechanisms, and wardrobe sliding tracks.

Keep this list with your warranty papers so a technician can order the right parts.

A routine for your modular kitchen

Every day

  • Wipe the hob, backsplash and nearby shutters with a soft cloth and mild soapy water after cooking. Fresh oil lifts easily; oil left overnight hardens into a sticky film.
  • Dry the countertop around the sink. Standing water is the main reason sink-base units fail.
  • Run the chimney or exhaust while cooking and for a few minutes after, so steam does not settle inside wall cabinets.

Every week

  • Clean shutter faces with a microfibre cloth. Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, and abrasive powders on laminate, acrylic and PU finishes.
  • Empty and wipe the cutlery organiser and dish rack tray.
  • Check under the sink for drips from the trap, the angle valve and the RO or purifier connections.

Every month

  • Open every drawer fully and remove crumbs from the channels. Grit is what makes telescopic channels grind and stick.
  • Wash the chimney baffle or mesh filters in hot water with a degreaser, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Look along shutter edges for lifted edge banding. A small lift can be glued back cheaply; left alone, it lets moisture into the board.

Every six to twelve months

  • Tighten hinge screws and adjust shutter alignment. Most concealed hinges have adjustment screws for height, depth and side gap. If you are unsure, ask the installer rather than forcing them.
  • Reseal a granite countertop if water no longer beads on the surface.
  • Inspect the silicone joint where the countertop meets the wall and the sink. Cracked or blackened silicone should be cut out and redone.
  • Check the gas pipe, hob connections and any electrical points inside cabinets. Gas and electrical work should always go to a qualified professional.

A routine for your wardrobes

Wardrobes suffer less from grease and more from damp, weight and pests.

  • Air them out. During the monsoon, open wardrobe doors for a short while on dry days. Silica gel sachets or moisture absorbers help in rooms that stay closed.
  • Watch the external walls. If a wardrobe backs onto an outside wall or a bathroom, check the back panel for damp patches and a musty smell every few months. The fix may lie in the wall itself, such as a plumbing leak or seepage, not the wardrobe.
  • Respect the load. Overloaded shelves bow permanently. Keep heavy items like luggage and files on the lowest shelves or in the loft, and do not hang on a single rod more than it was designed for.
  • Keep sliding tracks clean. Vacuum the bottom track of sliding wardrobes monthly. Hair and dust in the track are the usual cause of doors jumping off their rollers.
  • Guard against pests. Neem-based or naphthalene-free repellents in closed compartments help against silverfish and cockroaches. Look for fine wood dust near joints, which can signal borer activity and needs a pest control specialist.

Warning signs that need a professional

Some problems get more expensive every week they are ignored. Call your interiors contractor promptly if you notice:

  1. Swelling or bubbling at the bottom of the sink unit
  2. Shutters that will not stay aligned even after hinge adjustment, which may mean worn screw holes
  3. Drawers that drop or tilt when opened
  4. Laminate or veneer peeling across a large area
  5. Termite mud tubes on the wall behind any unit

Send clear photos and your materials list with any service request.

Maintenance starts at the design stage

The easiest units to care for are the ones planned with care in mind. When you are evaluating an interiors firm, ask how they handle these points:

  • Water-resistant board for the sink base and units near water
  • Ventilation gaps behind wardrobes on external walls
  • Hardware with spare parts easily available locally
  • A written specification listing every material

At Uniq Builders, interiors are designed and delivered end-to-end by our own team, from single kitchens and wardrobes to entire homes and offices, with a written specification shared during consultation. Our residential interiors service covers new homes as well as interiors for existing and older houses. Where interiors are part of a construction package, the handover includes a workmanship warranty and one year of free service, which is a good window to report any early settling or alignment issues. You can compare what each option includes on our construction packages page, and read more ideas in our Mysuru interiors articles.

Frequently asked questions

How often should modular kitchen hinges and channels be serviced?

A light check every month, clearing crumbs from channels and noticing any stiffness, is enough for most homes. A proper adjustment and tightening every six to twelve months keeps shutters aligned. Heavily used kitchens may need attention more often.

Can I use vinegar or bleach to clean laminate and acrylic shutters?

It is safer to avoid them. Strong acids, bleach and abrasive cleaners can dull or discolour laminate, acrylic and PU finishes over time. Mild soapy water and a microfibre cloth handle almost all everyday cleaning.
