Office Pantry and Cafeteria Fit Outs for Mysuru Workplaces
The pantry is the one room in an office that everybody uses every day, yet it is often planned last, squeezed into a leftover corner once the workstations and cabins are drawn. For business owners commissioning interiors in Mysuru, that habit shows up later as queues at the tea counter, a sink that floods the floor, and a smell of lunch drifting into the meeting room.
A well planned pantry or cafeteria does quiet, useful work. It keeps people on the floor instead of walking out for every cup of coffee, gives teams a neutral place to talk, and tells visiting clients that the business looks after its staff. Whether you run a ten person firm in a Vani Vilas Mohalla building or a larger IT or back office floor on the city’s outskirts, the planning questions are the same.
Decide what the space actually has to do
Before anyone picks a laminate, settle the use case. Office food spaces in Mysuru tend to fall into three broad types:
- Tea and coffee pantry. A counter, sink, water dispenser, small refrigerator, microwave and storage.
- Pantry with dining. The same service counter plus seating for staff to eat lunch in shifts.
- Cafeteria with a vendor. A serving counter, wash area and storage run by an outside caterer, with a larger dining hall. Relevant for campuses, institutions and bigger IT workspaces.
Count how many people will realistically use the room at the busiest time, not the total headcount. If lunch is staggered in two or three batches, seating can be sized to one batch.
Layout, services and the hidden work behind the counter
Most pantry problems come from services, not furniture. Water, drainage, power and ventilation have to be sorted before the carpenters arrive.
Plumbing and drainage. In a rented commercial floor, the pantry should sit as close as possible to an existing wet riser or toilet shaft. Long horizontal drain runs under a raised floor are a common source of leaks and blockages. Confirm with the building owner where you are allowed to tap in, and include a floor trap and a slight slope under the sink area.
Electrical load. A microwave, induction plate, coffee machine, refrigerator and water heater running together draw a significant load. Ask for dedicated circuits with their own protection, sockets placed above the counter backsplash rather than below it, and a separate line for the refrigerator so it is not tripped by other appliances.
Ventilation. Heating food creates odour and heat. An exhaust fan ducted to the outside is the minimum. In a sealed, centrally air conditioned floor, check with the building management how the exhaust will be routed so that pantry air does not return through the office ducts.
Circulation. Keep the working triangle of sink, counter and appliances compact, and separate the queue for water and tea from the path to the dining tables.
Finishes that survive daily use
Office pantries take far harder use than home kitchens, so specify accordingly.
- Counter tops: granite or quartz are practical choices; they tolerate hot vessels and frequent wiping. Avoid porous stones near the tea station.
- Cabinet carcass: in wet zones, prefer moisture resistant boards or water resistant ply with edge banding on every exposed edge. Swollen shutters under the sink are the most common complaint in older office pantries.
- Hardware: soft close hinges and drawer channels rated for commercial use.
- Flooring: anti skid vitrified tiles or a similar non slip surface, with skirting that can be mopped. Carpet has no place in a food area.
- Walls: a tiled or glass backsplash behind the counter, and washable paint elsewhere.
- Seating: tables with easy clean tops and chairs that stack or slide under, so the floor can be cleaned quickly after lunch.
Hygiene, waste and everyday upkeep
A pantry that looks good on handover can decline fast without systems built into the design. Plan for:
- Segregated waste bins built into the counter or placed in a defined corner, so wet and dry waste stay separate from day one, in line with local civic rules.
- Drinking water from a purifier with an accessible filter housing, so servicing does not require dismantling cabinets.
- Pest control access, meaning gaps behind and under units are either sealed or reachable for treatment.
- Hand washing at a separate basin if the budget and space allow, so the dish sink is not used for everything.
If you are bringing in a caterer, ask them early for their equipment list and service requirements. Their gas, exhaust or wash area needs may change the layout, and in some buildings cooking with gas may not be allowed at all. Confirm fire safety and trade licence requirements with the building management and the relevant authority before finalising the design.
Planning the fit out with a delivery team
A pantry is a small room with many trades in it: civil, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, stone, tiling, glass and appliances. Coordination between them is where most delays and rework come from. When you evaluate a contractor, ask whether design, services and carpentry will be handled by one team or passed between several vendors, and who will be answerable for leaks or electrical faults after handover.
At Uniq Builders, architecture, structure, interiors and construction are delivered in-house, with engineers, architects and craftsmen on our own payroll. Our commercial and corporate interiors service covers offices, banks, institutions and IT workspaces end to end, so the pantry is planned together with the rest of the floor rather than added at the end. We have worked across six cities in the region since 2009.
The first consultation and site visit are free. You can book a site visit with our Mysuru team, or browse more interiors guides for Mysuru homes and workplaces before you brief a designer. Call or WhatsApp +91 98449 93200, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pantry be added to an existing office without shutting it down?
Often, yes, though it depends on how much plumbing and electrical work is involved. Noisy and dusty tasks such as core cutting or tile removal can usually be scheduled for evenings or weekends by agreement with the building. A site visit is the right way to judge how disruptive the work will be.
How much space should we set aside for an office pantry?
There is no single figure, because it depends on peak users, whether people eat in the room, and whether a caterer operates there. Start from the number of people eating at the same time, add the service counter and a clear queue area, and let the designer test the layout on your actual floor plan.
Does Uniq Builders renovate pantries in older office buildings?
Yes. We take up renovation work and interiors for existing buildings, including upgrading pantries, plumbing and electrical points. The scope and quotation are worked out after we inspect the space.
