Wardrobes That Work: Internals, Finishes and Planning

Umashankara A

A wardrobe is the hardest-working piece of furniture in a bedroom, and the one most people plan last. The doors get all the attention in a showroom, but the internals decide whether the wardrobe serves you for fifteen years or irritates you for fifteen months. Good wardrobe design in Mysuru interiors starts with a simple question: who uses this wardrobe, and what do they actually store? Answer that honestly and most other decisions fall into place.

This guide follows the planning sequence we use on our own projects: internals first, then door type, then finish, then the details that rarely make it into a catalogue, ventilation, loft use and hardware quality. Uniq Builders has kept architecture, structure, interiors and construction in-house since 2009, so wardrobes here are planned alongside the room, not squeezed in after the walls are up.

If you are furnishing a whole home rather than one bedroom, our interiors category hub for Mysuru homes covers kitchens, storage and finishes in the same practical style.

Plan internals by user, not by template

A standard internal layout, two hanging rods and four shelves, suits almost nobody perfectly. Sketch the internals around the person who will use the wardrobe.

  • A working professional needs more full-height and half-height hanging than shelving: shirts, trousers and formal wear crease on shelves. Allow roughly one metre of hanging rod per person, plus a shallow drawer for accessories.
  • Someone who wears mostly sarees, kurtas or folded traditional wear needs the opposite: deep shelves and wide pull-out trays, with only a short hanging section for blouses and dupattas.
  • A child’s wardrobe should put daily-use shelves low and seasonal storage high, then be built so internals can be reconfigured as the child grows. Adjustable shelf pins cost little at fabrication and save a rebuild later.
  • Shared wardrobes work best with a hard vertical split, one clear territory per person, rather than shared shelves that turn into disputed ground.

Drawers deserve special thought. They are the most expensive internal component per square foot, so use them where they earn it: innerwear, accessories, documents and jewellery trays. Everything else can live on shelves at a fraction of the cost.

Sliding versus hinged: the honest trade-offs

Neither door type is simply better; they solve different problems.

Hinged doors give you full access to the entire wardrobe at once, allow mirrors and hooks on the inside face, and are cheaper to build and repair. Their cost is swing space: each door needs clear floor in front of it, which matters in a compact bedroom where the bed sits close to the wardrobe.

Sliding doors need no swing space, so they suit narrow rooms and wardrobes that run behind a door or beside a bed. The trade-offs are real: you can only see half the wardrobe at a time, the track mechanism carries the entire door weight and will show its quality within a few years, and the overlap between panels eats a few centimetres of opening. Cheap sliding hardware is the single most common wardrobe regret we hear about, so if the budget forces a choice, spend on the track and channel before spending on the shutter finish.

A useful rule: if there is at least 60 centimetres of clear floor in front of the wardrobe, hinged doors usually give better daily usability. Tighter than that, go sliding and buy good rollers.

Finish families and where each belongs

Wardrobe finishes group into a few families, each with a clear character.

  • Laminates are the workhorse: durable, easy to clean, huge range of colours and textures, and the most economical. Matt and textured laminates hide fingerprints better than gloss.
  • Acrylic and high-gloss finishes give a mirror-like, premium surface but show scratches and smudges, so they suit adult bedrooms more than children’s rooms.
  • Membrane and routed shutters allow grooves and profiles for a classic look, though deep grooves collect dust.
  • Veneer and duco-painted shutters sit at the top of the range and reward good site conditions and careful handling.

Match the finish to the user and the room’s light, not to the showroom sample under bright display lighting. Our residential interiors team always views shortlisted finishes in the actual bedroom before confirming.

Ventilation, lofts and the space above

Mysuru’s monsoon months bring enough humidity to matter inside a closed carcass. Small details prevent musty clothes: a few millimetres of ventilation gap in shutter design or discreet vent grilles, camphor or silica pouches in fabric-heavy sections, and never loading a wardrobe against a damp external wall without checking the wall first. Because construction and interiors sit under one roof at Uniq Builders, damp-proofing of that wall is handled during the build, not discovered after the wardrobe is installed.

Use the loft, the space between wardrobe top and ceiling, deliberately. Sealed loft shutters in the same finish make the wardrobe read as a single full-height unit and give you genuine storage for luggage and seasonal items. Leave the loft open only if you enjoy dusting.

The hinge-quality principle

Here is the principle we build wardrobes by: treat a hinge with the same seriousness as a roof slab. A hinge opens and closes thousands of times a year; it is the most heavily cycled component in the entire home. Soft-close hinges from a reputable hardware maker, properly rated drawer channels and solid sliding tracks cost a small premium at fabrication and decide almost entirely how the wardrobe feels in year five.

Interiors are part of two of our packages: Gold, modern semi-luxury standard construction, comes with complimentary interiors, and Platinum is fully customised, with luxury throughout and interiors included. The written specification names the hardware brands. You can compare what each tier covers on our packages page; after handover, every package carries a workmanship warranty and one year of free service.

Plan the internals around the user, choose doors by the floor space in front of them, pick finishes for the room rather than the showroom, ventilate the carcass, close the loft, and never economise on hinges. Do those six things and the wardrobe will quietly work for decades. To plan wardrobes as part of a full home build in Mysuru, book a free consultation and site visit with our team.

Frequently asked questions

What wardrobe depth should I plan for?

Around 60 centimetres of internal depth suits hanging clothes on standard hangers; shallower wardrobes force hangers to sit at an angle. For a shelves-only unit storing folded clothes, 45 to 50 centimetres works and saves floor space in a compact room.

Are sliding wardrobes worth the extra cost?

They are worth it when floor space in front of the wardrobe is genuinely tight, since they need no swing clearance. If you do choose sliding, put the budget into the track and roller mechanism first, because that hardware determines how the doors run after a few years of daily use.

Does Uniq Builders include wardrobes in its construction packages?

Interiors are included in two packages. Gold starts at ₹2,499 per square foot and comes with complimentary interiors, while Platinum starts at ₹2,999 per square foot and is fully customised, with luxury throughout and interiors included. These are starting rates and terms and conditions apply. The written specification, shared during consultation, sets out exactly which interior items are covered, and the final figure is confirmed after a free site visit.
