Walk In Wardrobe Planning for Duplex Homes in Mysuru

Umashankara A

A walk in wardrobe is one of the most requested features when families plan interiors in Mysuru for a new duplex. The upper floor of a duplex usually holds the master bedroom, and there is often a little extra depth or a corner that can become a dressing space instead of a row of hinged shutters against one wall.

The trouble is that a walk in wardrobe is really a small room. It needs a clear aisle, light, air and a sensible link to the bathroom. Treated as an afterthought during carpentry, it tends to end up cramped, dark and musty by the second monsoon.

Decide early: drawings stage, not carpentry stage

The single most useful step is to fix the wardrobe location while the floor plans are still being drawn. In a duplex, the upper floor walls sit over the lower floor structure, so moving a partition later can clash with beams, columns and the staircase landing.

At the drawing stage, confirm these points:

  • Which bedroom gets the walk in wardrobe. It is usually the master, but some families prefer it for elders on the ground floor so they avoid the stairs.
  • Whether the wardrobe sits between the bedroom and the bathroom, or opens only from the bedroom.
  • Where windows, ventilators and electrical points will go inside it.
  • Whether the staircase head room or a double height void limits the ceiling on that side.

At Uniq Builders, working drawings for all floors come with up to three rounds of revisions, and that is the right window to move a wall by a foot or add a ventilator. If you are still at the plan stage, our architectural design service covers this before any brickwork starts.

Sizing and layouts that actually work

A walk in wardrobe fails when the aisle is too narrow to open drawers and stand at the same time. As a general guide, carcass depth for hanging clothes is roughly 600 mm, and you need a clear walkway in front of it that lets one person turn around comfortably. Measure your own longest drawer pulled fully open and add standing room.

The common layouts are:

  1. Single wall (I shape). Storage on one side, walkway on the other. Suits a long, narrow passage leading to the bathroom.
  2. Parallel (galley). Storage on both sides. Good capacity, but needs more width so both sides remain usable.
  3. L shape. Uses a corner well and leaves room for a mirror or a small seat. Corner units need careful internal fittings so space is not lost.
  4. U shape. The most storage, best in a squarer room. Only worth it if the room is wide enough to keep the centre open.

Split the storage by how you use it, not only by who owns it. Long hanging for sarees wrapped on hangers and kurtas, short double hanging for shirts, shallow drawers for accessories, a locker section, open shoe racks near the entry and a top loft for suitcases and seasonal bedding. Many households also want a shelf for silk sarees in cloth covers.

Ventilation, damp and the Mysuru climate

Mysuru is milder than many cities, but the monsoon months still bring humidity, and a closed room full of fabric will smell stale without air movement. This is where a duplex walk in wardrobe differs from a loose furniture wardrobe.

Plan for:

  • A window or high ventilator on an external wall, even a small one, or an exhaust fan ducted outside.
  • A gap from the bathroom wet wall. If the wardrobe shares a wall with the shower, waterproof that wall properly and keep the carcass off it with a small air gap.
  • Board choice for the location. Use moisture resistant boards for any unit near the bathroom, and edge band every exposed edge so damp does not enter the core.
  • Louvred or ventilated shutters for sections that stay closed, or open shelving where dust is manageable.
  • No carcass sitting directly on the floor near a wash area. A raised plinth protects the base during floor mopping.

Lighting, power and finishing details

Because the space is enclosed, lighting decides whether you can tell navy from black in the morning. A central ceiling light alone throws shadows into the shelves.

A practical lighting plan includes a general ceiling light, strip lights inside hanging sections or under shelves, a well lit full length mirror, and sensor or door switches so lights turn off when you leave. Ask for a warm or neutral colour temperature that shows true fabric colours.

Plan power points during wiring: one for an iron or garment steamer, one near the dresser for a hair dryer, and a point inside the locker area if you want a lit or electronic locker. If your home has smart-home planning, wardrobe lights can be grouped with the bedroom scene.

Budget, packages and who to hire

Walk in wardrobes vary widely in cost because the quantity of carcass, fittings and shutters changes with the layout. Get a quote that lists running feet or square feet of units, board and laminate grades, hardware brands and lighting separately, so you can compare fairly.

If you are building a new duplex, check whether interiors are already part of your construction package. At Uniq Builders, packages start at ₹1,999/sq ft for Premium, ₹2,499/sq ft for Gold with complimentary interiors, and ₹2,999/sq ft for Platinum with interiors included throughout, as starting rates with terms and conditions applying. The exact wardrobe scope is set out in the written specification shared during consultation. You can compare them on our construction packages page.

When evaluating any interiors team, ask to see a working drawing of a wardrobe they designed, confirm who does the site measurement, and check whether design, carpentry and electrical work sit with one accountable team. Our own residential interiors service handles kitchens and wardrobes through to entire homes end to end, including interiors for existing houses. Frequently asked questions

Can I add a walk in wardrobe to an existing duplex?

Yes, if a room or part of a large bedroom can spare the space. The main checks are ventilation, whether a partition wall can be added without affecting the structure, and where the electrical points will come from. A site visit is the best way to confirm what is possible.

Should the walk in wardrobe connect directly to the bathroom?

A route from bedroom through wardrobe to bathroom is convenient for dressing after a bath. It does bring moisture closer to your clothes, so waterproofing, an exhaust fan and moisture resistant boards become essential. If ventilation is limited, a separate entry from the bedroom is the safer choice.

Is a walk in wardrobe better than regular sliding wardrobes?

It depends on the room. A walk in wardrobe keeps the bedroom visually clean and stores more, but it consumes floor area for the aisle. In a compact master bedroom, well planned sliding or hinged wardrobes along one wall may give you more usable space.
